Suky explains why it is a total win-win scenario when candidates keep their recruiter in the loop (and vice-versa).

Hi I’m Suky from Professional Selection, and I’d like to talk about whether you the candidates should tell your recruiter all the different companies and places that you’re interviewing. Now LinkedIn, places like that, you see both sides of the argument but I’m going to say yes, you should tell your recruiter that you’re interviewing and the kinds of roles you’re interviewing for. Now, should you give them the company name? Initial stages, no I don’t think you should, or you don’t have to is probably a better way to phrase that. What I would definitely say you should tell your recruiter is the types of roles you’re going for, the salary brackets and the locations.
Why? Because that’ll help, in the recruiters mind, find you the types of roles that you’re attracted to, so he’s potentially able to offer you other opportunities than the initial opportunity.
What stage should you tell the recruiter exactly who you’re interviewing with? I’m going to argue that that should be depending on how many interviews you’re going for, second or third stage. Again should you tell them which company it is? Well the more information you give the better that recruiter is going to be able to help you get the best offer from their client.
Now, I’m hoping by the time you’ve gone through this process you’ve built up a level of trust with that recruiter so why should you tell them? Well firstly they’re going to be able to manage the process with their client in terms of timelines etc, but they’re also going to be able to manage and guide the client in terms of salary, in terms of changes that they could make to the role to attract you as a candidate.
Ultimately at the end of the day I’m not going to mislead – as recruiters we want you to take our jobs because that is what the company is engaging us for. So if we come to you with the right offer, the right money and help the client tweak that role there is a higher chance of you being offered that role and you accepting that role.
